Niantic Railroad Bridge Closure Update

The bridge replacement project on the Niantic River is moving ahead well and the new bridge is temporarily in place, according to the CT Marine Trades Association. Due to bottom settlement, the lift span is slightly out of alignment and the contractors need 48 hours with the span in a closed position to realign and attach all the equipment and hardware.

The span closure is planned to take place from 9:00 p.m., Sunday, July 15, to 9:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 17. The channel should be available for small-vessel transit with a vertical clearance of 16′ at MHW. The old bridge will be in normal operation during this period.

Then, for the next 5 Sundays and Mondays, through August 20, there are planned 8-hour overnight closures of the new span from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. while additional work is underway. During these closures, openings may be available at midnight or 4:30 a.m. with a 2-hour notice. Always maintain contact with the bridge operator on VHF 13.

Tuesday nights from midnight to 6:00 during that period are also reserved for contingencies.

The goal of this additional work is to have the new span in full operation by August 25, at which time the old span will be raised and disassembled in place.  For more information call the CMTA office at (860-767-2645).
