Westerly Sun: A [Charlestown, RI] oyster farm was approved Thursday [April 2] for entry into a joint federal-state program aimed at re-establishing a self-sustaining oyster population in state waters. Jules Opton-Himmel, owner of Walrus and Carpenter Oyster Farm, received word on Thursday from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service that he was cleared to participate in local oyster-restoration efforts in Ninigret Pond. Opton-Himmel, whose operation was approved by the state Coastal Resources Management Council earlier this year for a 3-acre expansion of its existing aquaculture site on the Pond, joins a multitude of Rhode Island oyster farmers participating in the program, which is run in cooperation with the state Department of Environmental Management.
