Noank Captain, Historian Dies

Well-known Noank, Connecticut, resident and mariner Capt. Benjamin F. Rathbun passed away after an extended illness on July 31.

Capt. Ben ran the ANNA R out of Noank for over 30 years and was a well-respected marine surveyor. In his later years he became an author and expert on the lighthouses in Long Island Sound and the Sound’s maritime history.

Rathbun is survived by his wife of 60 years, Rosalie, their 3 children and grandchildren.

Celebration in his memory will be held August 13 from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Latham Chester Store in Noank.

Donations may be made to Noank Historical Society, Noank Fire Department or Noank Cemetary Association.
