Nuclear Sub Topeka in Portsmouth for Repairs

Seacoast Online: U.S. Navy Cmdr. Jim Belz said he and his USS Topeka crew are excited to be staying on the Seacoast.

Belz is commanding officer of the nuclear powered submarine Topeka, SSN 754, which is at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard for an overhaul, and will be at the local facility until fall 2014. The submarine will undergo maintenance work and several system upgrades, according to a press release from the shipyard’s public affairs office. The Navy said the estimated cost for the Topeka project is $145 million.
