East Hampton Star: East Hampton [NY] Town police arrested a Manhattan man Sunday [Sept. 4] on misdemeanor charges of reckless boating while intoxicated after he ran his vessel aground, injuring four passengers, all of whom were taken by ambulance to Southampton Hospital. The man, Benjamin Plum, 33, was held overnight for a Monday morning arraignment.
According to Ed Michels, the town’s chief harbormaster, Mr. Plum was operating a 28’ Cobalt model 228 ski boat when he went aground near Cedar Point in East Hampton. “He went up on the beach,” Mr. Michels said. The passengers went flying off on impact. It was unclear from the report, but Mr. Plum apparently got them all back on the boat and somehow got off the beach. Meanwhile, Mr. Michels said, “People on land called 911.”
