Old Saybrook, CT, to Host Rum Challenge Regatta
June 20, 2011
Middletown Press: The Essex Yacht Club’s annual Essex Rum Challenge Regatta returns to the waters of Long Island Sound off Old Saybrook on Saturday, July 30.
Sponsored by Gosling’s Rum, it is an East Coast Sailing Association sanctioned event and one of the five qualifying races for the Long Sand Shoal Cup. In addition to PHRF classes, both Spinnaker and Non Spinnaker classes will be established. The Racing Rules of Sailing for 2009-2012 including US Sailing Prescriptions will govern the race.
Known for competitive racing and serious post-event festivities for the past two decades, the Essex Rum Challenge has become a centerpiece of Long Island Sound summer regattas, attracting large fleets of participants from the tri-state area and beyond.
This year’s offshore event goes off at approximately 11:30 a.m., subject to race committee and conditions on the water, and wraps up on shore with a barbecue, beverages, music, dancing, and awards presentation on the grounds of the Essex Yacht Club.
One design racing in the Ideal 18 class will be held the following day, Sunday July 31, on the Connecticut River off of the EYC clubhouse. A number of participants from area yacht clubs with Ideal 18 programs are expected to turn out.
