Oyster Farming Suspended in Wareham, MA
October 17, 2015
SouthCoast Today: Selectmen [in Wareham, MA] have suspended all commercial oyster harvesting in town waters for the next 3 years. After struggling with the move’s potential economic impact on the local industry, the board agreed Tuesday night [Oct. 13] to harbormaster Garry Buckminster’s recommendation to suspend “the practice of Commercial Harvesting of natural set oysters” in Wareham.
Buckminster said this would be a big step toward preserving the oyster beds, which are being depleted by commercial harvesters from a stock that was already far from abundant, even after a 2-year closure of the beds.
