The Berkshire Eagle: Carving a serpentine path through the remote swampland that is the upper reach of the Housatonic River, a cadre of river enthusiasts struck out Tuesday morning on a 10-day trek to paddle all the way to the Long Island Sound.

Commemorating the 70th anniversary of the Housatonic Valley Association, the Housatonic River Adventure is a trip intended to highlight a variety of conditions along the 149-mile river and to showcase the efforts of river trustees to improve access to the Housatonic.

“This is like a dream come true,” said Lynn Stonebridge, of Tampa, Florida, as she and other paddlers took a short reprieve to carry their canoes and kayaks over Bullard’s Crossing Road.
