Penobscot River Salmon Return Encouraging

Maine fisheries biologists and fish advocates are encouraged by the number of Atlantic salmon that returned to the Penobscot River this year. Yet while the run was strong as compared to many previous years, conservationists point out that more work is needed to restore the stock, which is listed as federally endangered.

Many credit the 2013 removal of the Veazie and Great Works dams as being responsible for the robust numbers of returning salmon in recent years. The unofficial 2020 count is 1,603 salmon, up from 1,152 in 2019.
