Coast Guard Sector Long Island Sound and local commercial towing-assistance providers signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) on Thursday, August 6, at Coast Guard Station New London in New London, CT.

The agreement was the culmination of a pilot Search & Rescue (SAR) training program for Northeast commercial towing operators, harbormasters, fire and police departments that included 3 days of classroom sessions and 2 days of on-water, hands-on training utilizing Coast Guard assets. The people who participated in the program are now officially certified to assist in Coast Guard SAR operations.

“This MOA signing has great importance in that it’s the first of its kind in the country,” said Captain Wendy Sears, one of 3 Sea Tow Eastern Connecticut captains who completed the training course. “It promotes stronger cooperation and understanding between each of our entities, strengthening our on-water partnership, communications and operations. It allows us to be more available as an asset to the Coast Guard, to respond to marine search and rescue cases and, potentially save lives.”
