Portuguese Man-of-War Warnings on Martha’s Vineyard

Officials on Martha’s Vineyard are warning people that Portuguese man-of-wars — with tentacles that can deliver a painful sting to humans — have arrived early this year.

According to an article in the Vineyard Gazette, large numbers of Portuguese man-of-wars were found washed up on the south shore of the Vineyard this week, prompting officials to post warnings on south-facing beaches. While they are not uncommon in the area, they usually don’t arrive until later in the summer.
