Possible Hoax Distress Call Made in Narragansett Bay
November 5, 2012
The Coast Guard is investigating a possible hoax mayday call made on VHF Channel 16 on Thursday, November 1, near Narragansett Bay, Rhode Island.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England, in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, received the mayday call, which gave no position or nature of distress.
Using the Rescue 21 Radio System, watchstanders were able to determine that the call originated from Mount Hope Bay or the Providence River area. A Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew immediately launched an initial search for the source of the call and conducted a second search Friday morning without discovering any signs of distress.

“Hoax calls are particularly frustrating for both the maritime emergency responder and the taxpayers,” said Coast Guard officials. “They unnecessarily put first responders in danger, waste valuable operational hours and come at a heavy cost.”
The Coast Guard is requesting for anyone who recognizes the voice in the mayday call or has any information to contact Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England’s Command Center at (508-457-3211).
