Progress Made on RI Derelict Boat Bill
June 26, 2012
EastBayRI.com: Abandoned and derelict boats keep bobbing up along [Rhode Island’s] shorelines, a situation that environmental and boating officials say is a serious and growing problem. But if Governor Lincoln Chafee signs 2 pieces of legislation into law, towns like Warren will have greater means to get them out of their waterways.
The General Assembly approved legislation that will give towns and other public entities the teeth to dispose of abandoned vessels if their attempts to contact the owners fail and, if possible, to recoup some value from them. Vessels would be considered abandoned or derelict if they are left in the water for more than 45 consecutive days or more than 90 days during a calendar year.
