Public Urged to Attend Herring Hearings

The New England Fishery Management Council has begun a series of public hearings to solicit comments on the Draft Amendment 5 to the Atlantic Herring Fishery Management Plan.

Fishing and conservation groups are urging people to attend the hearings and voice their concern over the continued overfishing of sea herring and the bycatch of river herring (bluebacks and alewives). All 3 species are critical food sources for a variety of marine fish, mammals and birds.

All hearings start at 7:00 p.m.

Hearing dates and locations:

  • March 19: Fairhaven, MA, Seaport Inn, 110 Middle Street, (508) 997-1281
  • March 21: Portland, ME, Holiday Inn By the Bay, 88 Spring Street, (207) 775-2311
  • March 27: Plymouth, MA, Radisson Hotel Plymouth Harbor, 180 Water Street, (508) 747-4900
