Quahog Day Set for First Day of Summer
June 16, 2011
Tuesday, June 21 (the first day of summer) marks the Third Annual Cape Cod Quahog Day, sponsored by the Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce.
A ceremony will be held at 3:00 p.m. in Hyannis, emceed by NECN Meteorologist and Cape Cod native Tim Kelley. The Cape’s official quahog (Doug the Quahog) will come out of hiding for the official Quahog Prognostication on how many weeks of Cape Cod beach weather lie ahead. His inaugural prediction of 11 weeks of sunshine in 2009 proved disappointing. However, his optimistic prediction of 13 weeks last year led to a summer of bountiful beach days.
The ceremony will include live entertainment by Johnny Vance and the Outsiders, and will be followed by a festive Quahog Day bash at the nearby Cape Cod Maritime Museum. Quahog Day will also kick off a week of Quahog-related activities across the Cape, including a stuffed quahog eating contest, special discounts and menu offerings, and more.
The 2011 event is supported by the Cape Cod Maritime Museum, Cape Cod Textile, Quahog Republic, the Hyannis Area Chamber of Commerce, the Hyannis Main Street Business Improvement District (BID) and HyArts District.
