Review: Ugly Stik GX2 Combos
August 28, 2013
Shakespeare’s new Ugly Stik GX2 rod-and-reel combos are rugged, quality outfits that also represent a great value. We received a 2-piece spinning combo just prior to a trip to Moosehead Lake, Maine, and found it to be ideal for taking on most of the lake’s shallow-water species using a variety of lures and bobber-fishing rigs.
The GX2 spinning combos are available in 7 different lengths and actions. The rods are lightweight graphite construction with the signature Ugly Stik clear-fiberglass tip.
The GX2 spinning reels are the first Shakespeare reels designed specifically for Ugly Stik. Featuring a double anodized aluminum spool with oversized bail wire, each model has soft-touch handle knobs and 2 pinion bearings that reduce overall wear on internal parts.
Reel sizes 20 and 35 feature 3 ball bearings plus a 1-way clutch instant anti-reverse bearing. The 40 and 50 combos are built around 2 ball bearings plus a 1-way clutch instant anti-reverse bearing.
Each Ugly Stik GX2 Spinning Combo has an MSRP of $49.95.
The spincast combos feature a Shakespeare Synergy Steel 6 and 10 models, as well as a Synergy TI Micro option for anglers seeking ultralight sport.
The micro combos are pre-spooled with 4-pound Stren line, while the 6 and 10 size combos are spooled with 6- and 10-pound Stren, respectively.
