McMurdo’s new Smartfind S20 is a personal AIS MOB device that can be worn on a lifejacket and is activated by sliding off the safety tab and lifting an arming cap to deploy the antenna. The compact, lightweight unit is designed to function as an aid to recovering crewmembers who have fallen overboard by sending alert messages, GPS position and a special identity code directly to AIS receivers within an approximate 4-mile radius. A flashing LED light aids location at night.
The S20’s unique, built-in GPS receiver updates the wearer’s position every 60 seconds, providing precise location, distance and bearing data. Fellow crewmembers and crew on nearby AIS-enabled receivers receive all the information they need to locate the position of the person in the water, enabling a speedy recovery. The S20 will transmit continuously for a minimum of 24 hours and has a 7-year battery storage life. It features a durable ABS housing and is waterproof to 5 meters.
