RI Website Facilitates Cleanup Volunteering

Rhode Island area residents now have a one-stop shop for volunteer clean-up opportunities, thanks to the initiative of one local nonprofit. The site, KeepRIClean.org, is a clearinghouse for neighborhood, park, river and coastal cleanups throughout Rhode Island and was initiated by Save The Bay to increase public awareness and participation in cleanups statewide and to help area groups in efficiently organizing their efforts.

Last year, the Audubon Society of Rhode Island (which oversees International Coastal Cleanup Day in the state) documented that more than 26,000 pounds of trash was removed from beaches on 1 active day of cleanups by 2,000-plus volunteers throughout Rhode Island. The collective effort of groups and volunteers from around the state has a measurable impact upon the environment.

With the growing number of cleanups taking place year-round, and the increasing demand for environmental volunteer opportunities, the creation of KeepRIClean.org was a natural way to make organizing and volunteering in a cleanup easy for organizers and participants alike. Volunteer opportunities at KeepRIClena.org are posted online by non-profit organizations and municipalities.

A geographically diverse group of 15 organizations have already committed to contributing to the clean-up calendar. They include:
