RI Yacht Club Wins Fight to Rebuild
October 22, 2010
EastBayRI.com: After a protracted public hearing that began in June and has continued for hours every month since, Tiverton’s town council last Tuesday night voted 5-0 to approve a zoning designation for the Tiverton Yacht Club that would allow it to rebuild a clubhouse that burned to the ground in 2003.
The unanimous vote was taken after less than an hour’s discussion, with council member Joanne Arruda absent and council president Donald Bollin recusing himself because of a conflict, having done business with the club.
The vote would appear to resolve a long-standing zoning dispute between the club and some of its neighbors, who for years have filed legal and other objections to the rebuilding.
The end may not yet be in sight, however. David Campbell, the club’s immediate neighbor to the north, reportedly indicated to a small gathering outside town hall after the vote that he plans to file an appeal with the Superior Court challenging the council decision. Town officials after the meeting also acknowledged the possibility.
