RI’s Clean The Bay to Expand Coverage
November 10, 2010
A $120,000 grant from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration will let the Rhode Island group Clean The Bay (CTB) extend its efforts from the coast up the Taunton River to the Fall River area.
CTB’s mission is to clear the shoreline of large manmade debris, including abandoned boats, tires and pilings. However, the group began by removing hundreds of wooden WW II “camels” (wooden floats used to suspend submarine nets) from the shores of Narragansett Bay. CTB claims to fill a gap for municipalities that don’t have the resources to get rid of large objects that can threaten navigation and the environment.
