Rockport, MA, to Build Straitsmouth Island Boat Ramp

According to the Gloucester Times, bids are out for the construction of a boat ramp on the southwest shore of tiny Straitsmouth Island, in Rockport. The 30-acre island serves as a wildlife sanctuary managed by MassAudubon, and features walking trails and a lighthouse, which is in the process of being restored. It lies some 480′ off Cape Ann and can be reached by small boat and kayak.

Construction of the ramp, which will eventually feature an electric winch to haul boats up the ramp, is expected to be completed by the end of summer.

The hope of building the ramp is to open the island to tourism.
