SailMaine 2012 Open House Set for June 10
May 2, 2012
SailMaine, a Portland-based community sailing center, will offer free sailboat rides to adults, teens, and kids (age 8 and up) on Sunday, June 10, at its 5th annual Open House, on the Portland waterfront from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., (rain date, June 17).
Certified SailMaine instructors, coaches, volunteers and experienced program sailors will take visitors for free sails aboard 14’ 420s, 21’ Ynglings and larger cruising sailboats.
Shoreside activities will include boat rigging, knot tying, and a make-your-own sailboat station for children among other fun activities. Food and snacks will be available for purchase.
Permission forms will be required, with parent/guardian signatures for minors, and may be obtained in advance at SailMaine’s website: www.sailmaine.org or at the event. Lifejackets will be provided, but visitors should feel free to bring their own, along with wet weather gear.
“Our goal is to get kids and adults sailing,” said Sarah Helming, Director of SailMaine’s Programs and Events. “We want to share our love of sailing and provide a connection to Maine’s maritime heritage.” The Open House also offers prospective sailors opportunities to meet and learn from high school team sailors, adult ‘frostbite’ sailors, and Sail Maine’s talented staff.
