SailMaine to Offer Free Sailboat Rides and More at Open House
June 6, 2011
SailMaine, the Portland-based community sailing center, will offer free sailboat rides to adults, teens, and kids (age 8 and up) on Sunday, June 12, at its 4th annual Open House, on the Portland waterfront, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., rain or shine.
Shoreside family activities will include boat rigging, knot tying, a marine yard sale and a make-your-own sailboat station for children. “Dory dogs,” crepes, and drinks will be sold.
Certified SailMaine instructors, coaches, and experienced program sailors will take visitors for free sails aboard 21-foot Ynglings and 14-foot 420s, as well as cruising sailboats for larger groups.
Permission forms are required for those under 18, and may be obtained in advance at SailMaine’s website: www.sailmaine.org or at the event. Lifejackets will be provided, but visitors should feel free to bring their own, along with wet weather gear if they have it.
“Our goal is to get kids and adults sailing,” said Sarah Helming, director of SailMaine’s Programs and Events. The Open House also offers prospective sailors opportunities to meet and learn from high school team sailors, adult ‘frostbite’ sailors, and Sail Maine’s talented staff.”
