Sailors, Dogs Assisted off Newport

Coast Guard rescue crews assisted 2 sailors and 2 dogs on a sailboat approximately 10 miles of the coast of Newport, Rhode Island, on Thursday, July 12.
Watchstanders from Sector Southeastern New England command center received a distress call from the 43’ sailing vessel Nomad at 1:00 p.m. reporting that the vessel was taking on water.
Sector Southeastern New England command center crews used line-of-bearing technology in their Rescue 21 communications system to determine a general location of the vessel.
A Coast Guard Station Castle Hill, 45-foot Response Boat-Medium, the Coast Guard Cutter Tigershark and a Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew immediately responded.
The Station Castle Hill crew assisted in de-watering the vessel and secured the source of flooding.
The sailors and their dogs safely continued on their voyage to Block Island, Rhode Island.
