Salem’s Friendship Being Repaired

Salem News: There’s a hole in the Friendship. If you’ve been down by [Salem’s] Derby Wharf, you’ve probably noticed a 100-square-foot gap in the hull and wondered how it got there. But Salem’s prized replica of an 18th-century trading vessel wasn’t broadsided by the British and it never struck an iceberg.
Rather, the yawning gash on the starboard side, toward the stern, is part of an effort by the National Maritime Historic Site to keep Friendship shipshape. Experts from Dion shipyard in Salem won a competitive bidding process to do the work.
