Joshua & Natsuko Shaffer are roving cinematographer/photographers who were invited to photograph the 2013 Great Schooner Race, held in Rockland, Maine, on Friday, July 5. They captured these stunning images of the race, held each summer since 1977, and some of the festivities.

Thanks for sharing, guys!

About the Great Schooner Race:
Hailed as “the largest annual gathering of traditional schooners in America,” each year at least 20 schooners participate in the Great Schooner Race on Penobscot Bay.

The history of racing these magnificent wooden coasting schooners started over a century ago with sailors trying to beat their competitors to market. The first boat back to port always got the best price for their cargo—perhaps fish, lumber, granite or even Christmas trees. The “Race” was always unspoken, but ever present.
