Sea Tow Automated Radio Checks Available off Montauk
August 20, 2012
Sea Tow Services International, Inc., the nation’s leading professional marine assistance provider, has announced that Montauk Marine Basin is now a Sea Tow Automated Radio Check host station. Boaters in Long Island’s Montauk Harbor and the surrounding areas of Block Island Sound can take advantage of this vital boating safety service free of charge by calling Channel 26 on their VHF radio.
Sea Tow’s Automated Radio Check service, which is provided in association with MariTEL, lets boaters quickly and easily check that their vessel’s VHF radio is in good working order. To use the service, they simply tune the VHF to the local Automated Radio Check channel, key the mic, and request a radio check. They will hear an automated response and their call will be played back to them, confirming that the radio is operational and allowing them to assess transmission strength, a crucial safety check.
Sea Tow’s Automated Radio Check service also aids the U.S. Coast Guard by reducing non-emergency communications on VHF Channel 16, freeing the channel up for distress call activity.
The first and only service of its kind in the U.S., Sea Tow’s Automated Radio Check repurposes existing technology in an innovative way by utilizing marine operator channels that are no longer needed for voice transmissions. Automated Radio Check is broadcast via VHF channels 24-28, depending on the region. To find the dedicated Automated Radio Check channel in a particular area, all a boater needs to do is visit www.seatow.com/arc, enter their city, state or zip code, and find their location on the interactive map.
