27East.com: A dead 800-pound leatherback sea turtle was found washed ashore in Shinnecock Bay on Wednesday afternoon [July 16], the apparent victim of a boat propeller.

Members of the Riverhead Foundation for Marine Research and Preservation said they were notified of the injured reptile at around 1:30 p.m. and responded a short time later to the southern end of Atterbury Road in Shinnecock Hills. Officials later determined that the 7’-long endangered turtle had been dead for more than 48 hours, pointing to the large gash across its shell.
