Significant Oil Spill in New Bedford Harbor
August 29, 2013
Crews this morning (August 29, 2013) were working to clean up a “significant” oil spill near Pier 3 in Massachusetts’ New Bedford Harbor, according to an article on SouthCoastToday.com.
The spill of diesel fuel, which was reported around 7:30 a.m., likely happened overnight, Deputy Fire Chief Paul Coderre said. In the tides and wind, it has spread north and south of the bridge, with clumps collecting near the pier, he said.
“It does cover a large area of the harbor … but the actual recoverable amounts are in three or four pockets,” he said. “It’s not a major spill but it’s a significant spill.”
