Simrad RS90 VHF
March 6, 2014
Simrad’s new modular, black box VHF radio, the RS90, has numerous communication and safety features such as an Automatic Identification System (AIS) receiver, hailer, foghorn and intercom, as well as NMEA connectivity for sharing data with Simrad multifunction displays.
The RS90 is Class D-compliant for global use, and includes a built-in, dual-channel AIS receiver that allows both AIS reception and VHF use via a single antenna. A 30-second “record and replay” lets you review important calls, while the optional scrambler provides the ability to keep favorite fishing spots secret. The system’s “Track Your Buddy” feature connects DSC position polling with Simrad MFDs via the NMEA 2000 network for GPS location display of up to 3 boating friends. Additional features include GPS navigation and Man Overboard (MOB) button.
Housed in a black box, all major RS90 components are hidden from sight, while the unit’s handset, encased in rubber for durability and a nonslip grip, can be conveniently installed anywhere onboard. The radio has a large, easy-to-read 180 x 128-pixel LCD display with adjustable backlighting, plus a built-in, telephone-style speaker and alphanumeric keypad. The RS90 can support up to 6 handsets—4 wired and 2 wireless when paired with the compact Simrad HS35 Wireless Handset. The unit is waterproof and submersible, and is protected by a 2-year limited warranty and supported for an additional 3 years by the Simrad 5-Year Advantage Program.
