Sloop Providence Sails Again
April 21, 2011
The 110-foot refurbished sloop Providence, a replica of the first warship to sail under America’s Navy, has been relaunched after more than 3 1/2 years at the dock. The ship was launched on Friday, April 15, from Promet Marine Services in Providence, where restoration work was being performed.
The ship spent the weekend in Newport, but will soon be back in the state capital, where it will host charter trips and educational missions.
The Providence replica was built in 1976, and has been used in 2 of the Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
