The Hartford Examiner’s Janet Serra reports on 17 diamondback terrapin hatchlings that were intercepted in Alaska by customs officials and are headed for the Soundwaters Coastal Education Center in Stamford, Connecticut.

The Center’s staff was busy setting up special nursery tanks and consulting with turtle specialists. Once the turtles are grown, they will be used for hands-on education.

The diamondback terrapin is the only estuarine turtle in the U.S., with a range extending from the Gulf Coast to Cape Cod.
