Stonington, CT, Sailing Foundation Buys Waterfront Property
May 30, 2011
The Stonington SHYC Sailing Foundation has announced the purchase of waterfront property at 70-72 Water Street in Stonington, Connecticut. The complex, located just north of Skipper’s Dock restaurant and The Inn at Stonington, includes 3 buildings and docks.
The Foundation has been leasing the site since 2008 as a base for its community sailing and science classes. Prior to that, the property was used by the Mohegan Tribe for its shellfish aquaculture business, and before that it served as the home of the Garbo Lobster Pound. It was also used as the location for the restaurant in the award-winning movie, Mystic Pizza.
Renovations to the site have already begun: roof work is in progress, and bathrooms and a small galley are about to be installed. The property will allow the club to become year-round facility and to expand its programs and offerings.
To raise funds to renovate the property, the Foundation has begun a $3.5 million capital campaign. In addition to sailing and marine biology, the Foundation offers classes in windsurfing, surfing, and kayaking. New this year are Ideal 18 keelboats and standup paddleboards, which will offer additional ways for students to get out on the water.
