Dan Flanigan, an engineering student at Bucknell University, and his friends have built and plan to launch a 12’ long, 150-pound autonomous robotic boat designed to cross the Atlantic Ocean, according to a report on Pro Boat Radio. The boat, named Scout IV, relies on pre-programmed commands and information that it can collect about its environment through sensors.

After launch, which the team hopes will take place in 2013, the boat’s status will be reported live online.

Home base for the project is Tiverton, Rhode Island.
