Thacher Island Public Access Moves Closer to Reality

Gloucester Times: The Thacher Island Association’s hopes of making Straitsmouth Island accessible to the public for the first time in 80 years are closer to fruition.

The association was awarded a $102,000 grant by unanimous vote when the state Seaport Economic Council met Tuesday in St. Joseph Hall, Salem. The nonprofit group, which volunteers on the 30-acre island for the town of Rockport, plans to use the money to build a boat ramp allowing boaters, kayakers, hikers, bird watchers and people to land and tour the island’s historic lighthouse and the keeper’s house.
