Thousands of Mussels Removed from Massachusetts Navigation Buoy
June 14, 2017
A new video recently posted by the crew of Coast Guard Cutter Oak, home ported in Newport, shows the crew performing maintenance on a massive navigation buoy off the Massachusetts coast.
In the video the crew raises and cleans the buoy and its chain of marine growth and mussels that build up over time and can weigh down the buoy. The amount of marine growth is amazing, and makes one wonder if the bivalves could have be harvested instead of shoveled over the side.
