True North 34G Boasts Hybrid Power
April 6, 2011
True North Yachts by Pearson Marine Group has announced the debut of the diesel-electric hybrid-powered 34G. The 34G can run for over 4 hours at up to 6 knots exclusively off its battery-powered electric motor. In conventional 280-hp diesel mode, the 34G boasts a 19-knot cruise and a 22-knot top end. Range is 250 miles.
The lightweight Steyr hybrid boasts many performance breakthroughs in addition to its quiet, “zero emissions” electric mode. The diesel works in unison with the gear-mounted electric motor to increase fuel efficiency during acceleration. Furthermore, the diesel sends 48V power to recharge the battery bank and, with the Mastervolt inverter/charger, provides ample AC power to supply the hot-water heater, microwave and even an air conditioner. There is no need for a generator, which translates to more interior space.
Other features include an LED interior, exterior and navigation lights that reduce power consumption by 75% and eliminate the nuisance, waste and cost of bulb replacement. Canopy-mounted solar panels constantly charge the 34G’s battery banks when the engine isn’t running. The boat’s carbon-fiber canopy, light engine and compact Mastervolt batteries help reduce the overall weight, which means the 34G requires less power and fuel to reach the same speeds as its predecessor and the competition.
On deck, the 34G features a large, versatile cockpit with transom bench and aft-facing seat along the cabin bulkhead. The bench seat and midtransom panel, or “tailgate”, fold down to provide wide-open access to the teak swim platform with telescoping swim ladder.
The pilothouse features a roomy, elevated L-shaped settee that provides great views of the horizon and the aft cockpit. The high-gloss, inlayed table lowers for easy conversion to a full berth. The galley, to starboard, has a flush counter surface, refrigerator, single-burner alcohol/electric stove and hot and cold pressure faucet. The louvered, sliding companionway door provides ventilated privacy to the V-berth forward. An aft Eisenglass enclosure allows climate control and protection from the elements. It can easily be removed to blend the interior into a vast, open cockpit, creating an ideal layout for gathering in an indoor/outdoor setting.
