Tying a Light-Tackle Wind-On Leader System
September 20, 2018
A wind-on leader is extremely helpful when it comes to casting lures and baits to inshore game fish, as it allows you to reel the leader inside the rod guides before making a cast.
This makes for more accurate casts and helps when landing a fish. Plus, you don’t have to worry about a swivel getting caught in the tiptop guide and possibly damaging the rod.
My preferred wind-on leader system for inshore casting involves 2 basic knots. First, tie a spider hitch in the end of the braided main line then use a Bristol knot (sometimes called a “no-name knot”) to connect the braid to a fluorocarbon or mono leader. The connection is very strong and relatively easy to tie. It also has a low profile, allowing it to pass easily through the rod guides.
