U.S. Boat Leads 5th Leg of Volvo Ocean Race

American boat Team Alvimedica, skippered by Charlie Enright of Bristol, RI, took the lead in the 5th leg of the Volvo Ocean Race early Sunday, March 29, as the now 5-boat fleet continued toward Cape Horn and eventually to ItajaĆ­ in southeastern Brazil The 5th leg began in Auckland, New Zealand

The Chinese boat, Team Dongfeng, was forced to drop out when their mast broke early Monday morning.

The fleet is expected to round Cape Horn on Monday and bragging rights, but no points, go to the boat that leads at that point.

The 38,739-nautical-mile, round-the-world race began on Oct. 11 in Alicante, Spain. The boats are scheduled to make a much-anticipated stop in Newport, RI, in early May after completing the 6th leg of the race.
