Unmanned Kayak Sparks Search off Gloucester, MA

Gloucester Times: An overturned kayak found near Magnolia Harbor set off a Coast Guard search Saturday morning [Sept. 9].

The 10-foot, blue kayak was found around 8:30 a.m. and had no identification on it, said Jay Woodhead, a civilian search-and-rescue controller. After crews searched for an hour and a half and found no signs of distress, the Coast Guard called off the search, he said.

“We are hoping to find out who the kayak belongs to,” Woodhead said. “We did a search and we suspended the search. We were concerned there was a missing person, but we found no signs of distress. No one has come forward to claim the kayak.”
