November 6, 2015
The Coast Guard has ended its search after covering nearly a 900-square-mile area over 26 hours after an abandoned kayak containing fishing equipment was spotted near Plum Island, NY, on Tuesday, Nov. 3.
The search began when a Good Samaritan noticed an overturned red kayak off East Point and notified the Coast Guard. A small boat from the Montauk Coast Guard station and a helicopter were dispatched to locate a possible person in the water.
The Coast Guard is asking anyone who has information on a missing fishing kayak to contact the Coast Guard Long Island Sound command center at (203) 468-4444.
