On May 13, New England Boating’s Tom Richardson visited the Volvo Ocean Race Village in Newport, RI, to chat with local hero Charlie Enright, skipper of Team Alvimedica, currently in 5th place in the around-the-world race. For Enright, the Newport stopover represents a homecoming, as the Rhode Island native was born and raised—and cut his sailin teeth—in nearby Bristol.
In the interview, shot at the Alvimedica Team headquarters at Fort Adams, Enright discusses his sailing education, as well as some of his experiences during the Ocean Race, which is nearing completion.
Meanwhile, the 6 remaining teams in the Ocean Race are resting up for the next leg of the race, which begins May 17. They will also be training off Newport over the weekend off Castle Hill, affording the public a great chance to see these high-tech vessels in action. The Ocean Race Village at Fort Adams is open to the public through this weekend.
Bonus video! Interview with Alvimedica Watch Captain Mark Towill, who talks about his experience during the race and daily life aboard the boat.
