During the 19th century, New Bedford was considered “the city that lit the world,” because of the amount of oil its whaling industry harvested and shipped around the globe to be used for lighting. The national park in downtown New Bedford celebrates that whaling heritage, and the visitor’s center has maps, brochures and information about the area to help visitors explore the park.
