Westport, MA, Herring Get New Passage to Spawning Grounds

EastBayRI.com: Work done last March helped herring find their way back to old spawning waters in Cockeast Pond, but the small fish still faced long odds.
So last week volunteers from several groups along with town workers returned to the tidal stream and this time they think they got it right.
Working with heavy equipment, they ripped up River Road and the culvert beneath. That done, they operated on a Little Compton water main, moving and lowering it roughly a foot deeper into the ground.
“What we did last year was a temporary fix but what was really needed was to change the slope,” said Charles Gerrior of the Westport River Watershed Alliance.
