Yacht Builder Proposes Move to Eastport, Maine
October 22, 2010

Officials in Eastport, Maine, say that Florida-based luxury yacht builder David Marlow of Marlow Yachts would like to open a manufacturing facility in Eastport and has made a proposal to buy The Boat School, a city-owned boatbuilding and marine-trades school. The yacht-manufacturing business could employ up to 100 people.

City Manager Jon Southern told the Bangor Daily News that Marlow approached the City Council this week and floated a proposal to buy The Boat School, which Eastport leases to Husson University for its marine-trades program. Marlow told the council he’d like to expand The Boat School program from a 2- to 4-year program, expand the existing boatyard and build an onsite manufacturing plant for his yachts.
The Boat School is America’s oldest boatbuilding school and marine-trades training program. It currently offers 1- and 2-year certificate and diploma programs in boatbuilding and composites technology. The Boat School also offers professional development training for workers already engaged in a marine trade.
