10-Year-Old Lands 41-Pound Striper
June 1, 2012
Capt. Jim White of White Ghost Charters in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, wanted to share the following story involving his precocious grandson, Devon “DJ” White. DJ is 10 years old and already an accomplished angler. He logs more hours on the water than some professional guides, and has taken every species of fish that swims in Narragansett Bay.
On Memorial Day 2012, DJ was fishing with his father—also a charter captain—when he landed a 41-pound, 4-ounce striper, which was weighed in at Ray’s Bait & Tackle in Apponaug. He caught the fish on a live menhaden after fishing 17 hours straight.
“Here’s a remarkable coincidence,” Jim White wrote. “Twenty-one years ago, almost to the day, on May 29, my son landed his first 40-pound fish on a live eel while fishing with me. He was 10 years old. The photo I took of him that day made the cover of the New England Fisherman magazine. Amazing!”
