2 Saved, Boat Lost off Beavertail, RI
June 4, 2012
WPRI.com: Two men escaped serious injury after their boat ran out of fuel and drifted into rocks Saturday off Beavertail Point in Jamestown, Rhode Island.
The Coast Guard tells Eyewitness News that two men were aboard the boat, which was coming into Narragansett Bay to deliver the boat to its owner in Newport. They ran out of fuel, and the combination of 20- to 30-knot winds and waves of about 6’ to 10’ feet sent the craft drifting towards rocks along the shore.
The Coast Guard responded with a boat of its own and attempted to take the men off their boat—one of them fell into the water while trying to jump to the Coast Guard boat. The Coast Guardsmen threw him a line, which he was able to grab, but he apparently lost his grip on it when hit by another wave.
