2013 CT Schooner Fest This Weekend
September 9, 2013
The first annual Connecticut Schooner Festival will welcome up to 20 of the sturdy, sleek sailing vessels to Mystic and New London.
On September 11 and 12, a host of exciting, hands-on educational activities will take place at the Mystic Seaport in an effort to provide visitors with an understanding of the sea and the role schooners have played throughout history. Dockside education topics at the Seaport will range from navigation, the physics of sail theory, ropes and line handling and other elements of the seafaring life.
On September 13, the schooners will travel to the historic port of New London, where a race will take place on September 14. Working in conjunction with the Flock Theatre and the New London County Historical Society, the Connecticut Schooner Festival will host a colorful and elaborate historical pageant that will mark one of the city’s darkest moments when a British invasion force led by Connecticut native Benedict Arnold burned a significant part of New London, while other Red Coats under his command attacked and brutally killed young Connecticut patriots in Groton on the opposite shore. The Flock Theatre, a locally-based and nationally recognized theatre group, has created an outdoor presentation that will colorfully recall the days when cities like New London would burn Benedict Arnold in effigy. It will come almost to the day 232 years earlier when the Norwich native and his troops landed in the city.
