4 Rescued off Norwalk Islands
October 28, 2010
The Westport Patch reports that 4 New York men were rescued from a 25-foot Mako center console on Saturday, Oct. 23, following a search by police marine units from Westport, Norwalk and Fairfield.
Norwalk Marine Police initially picked up a distress call from the captain of the vessel at around 9:00 a.m. VHF channel 16, saying that the men were taking on water off approximately 3 miles south of Cockenoe Island in 40 feet of water. The men were able to provide their latititude and longitude, then fired several flares as marine units closed in.
Eventually the captain spotted a Norwalk Police boat and was able to radio directions to lead officers to his position. The 4 men were taken aboard the Norwalk marine unit, after which the Westport marine unit, a Coast Guard vessel and a Sea Tow salvage boat arrived to assist. The men were uninjured.
