Bangor Daily News reports that the College of the Atlantic (COA) in Bar Harbor, Maine, has added 8,000th humpback whale to its North Atlantic Humpback Whale Catalog database.

The database, which was started in 1977 by students and faculty at the college, is designed to help researchers track and assess the health of both individual whales and the species’ overall population in the North Atlantic, which is currently estimated at 11,500 whales.

According to marine mammal researchers at COA, the North Atlantic population of humpbacks was estimated at less than 2,000 animals when the college published its first catalog, which contained photographs of 120 humpbacks. Today, the database contains some 32,500 images and other types of records.
